Ether (Akash) Mudra- The Void
And we begin with The Void. Clean slate.Â
Â
Day 1, Akash Mudra
The first 5 mudras in "A Month of Mudras" balance the Five Elements in the body.
Today, we cover the Ether (emptiness) element.
Ether is space, but is not necessarily air. It's the space between cells, the space between people, planets, universes, thoughts. Beautiful, LITERAL nothingness that holds the potential of everythingness. Hard to conceive of rationally.
Â
Akash Mudra (Ether)Â also sometimes called Shunya Mudra
How to practice
Touch the thumb to tip of middle finger. Other three fingers fully extended as much as is possible. Be aware of the spaces between fingers.
Â
Akash Mudra can be used to assist detoxification or any kind of letting go, but can be practiced at any time-- during yoga, meditation or in "regular" life-- in any posture or even during non-exercise movement.
About Akash Mudra (Shoonya Mudra, Aakash Mudra)
Translation: "Ether" (vacuity, space between, void)
Element of the body brought to balance: Ether, Nothingness/ Potential
Physical benefit: aids elimination and detoxification
Lifeskill: Clearing energy, quieting chatty thoughts, joining with collective consciousness, letting go of baggage, finding freedom, release
My favorite accompaniment to chanting of "OM". This is my go-to when I want to throw off my shackles. Or reboot.
Clears space for the other 4 elements to arise within, like wiping the slate clean so that you can eventually start over.
